CORPORATE WELLNESS PROGRAM
In 2001, Dr. Watson, President of HCI, launched the Health & Wellness Committee (HWC) for the District of Columbia Chamber of Commerce and served as the chair of the committee and a member of the board of directors until 2005. The mission of the committee was to forge partnerships with businesses and key stakeholders in the District and metropolitan area in an effort to increase health awareness in business communities, facilitate employer-employee health partnerships, and support activities that promote healthier lifestyles, safer communities and a more productive workforce in the District of Columbia.
During 2001-2005, the HCI team developed and co-managed the famously fun and healthy annual 10:10:10 Capital Fitness Challenge, a ten week corporate/workplace wellness program established to address the increasing health care costs for employers and reduce the impact of the growing obesity epidemic and other chronic non-communicable lifestyle disorders in the workforce.
Over 1000 employees spread across thirteen organizations participated in the 10 week challenge and credited improved personal health and well-being to participation in the program.
Participating organizations included:
- ACS
- Amtrak
- Department of Health & Human Services
- DC Department of Health: Maternal and Family Health Administration
- DC Fire & EMS
- DC Water and Sewer Authority
